New Season!

The new season is in full swing! My wife and I were driving to a meeting last night and she saw a Christmas a tree up and could not believe it. The stores have the Christmas decorations out and if you are like me you are wondering where did the year go! Thanksgiving will be here in 3 weeks! I have to set the date for our annual Christmas Party. Cami and I are already talking about where to put our boys for school next year. The first semester is not even over yet! Football season is over and basketball is starting right up. We did not even get to morn the loss in the semi final football game! WOW!

As you can see It has been some time since I last posted. You can begin to see why! This post starts a new season in our life; the birth of our new business and we are looking forward to seeing it grow. D4 Max Fitness is the totality of all of my years of experience and love for health and fitness! I have put together what I feel is a complete package with products, services, philosophy and vision. Many of us need a new start with our health, our goals, our finances, our vision, and our lives! D4 Max Fitness wants to assist you in making your dreams a reality!

For me, if I can get the physical right or at least heading in the right direction, everything else feels better and works better! If I don’t train or workout, I eat junk. If I eat junk, I feel bad mentally and emotionally and my personal and work life suffers. Ultimately my relationship with God, my family and others suffer too! D4 Max Fitness is here to help you with all of these areas, either one at a time or all together for the really motivated person. Now is the time to begin to change, not January 1. If you wait until then you are already behind. It is said that the average person gains 8-10 lbs from now through the end of the year. You don’t have to be that person! Don’t be average! Be extraordinary! Loose 8-10lbs before Jan 1. Get your vision back! Begin with new goals now!

D4 Max Fitness can show you how to lose unwanted fat, lower your weight, increase your lean muscle mass, become more mobile and flexible and stronger! We show how you to make simple changes in your diet and take all the complicated dieting away. We can show you how by changing one thing, the water you drink, you can radically change your life!

WOW! Time flies! I was looking at the calender and realized it has been 2 years since I was first introduced to David Whitley and the RKC and Kettlebells! I had been tired of having consistent back spasms and wanted stop it at any price! I had played rugby for 10 years prior and had less problems then. One would think that does not make sense. Rugby is a tough sport with no pads and a great deal of hitting! Yes, and I loved it! I miss it still today!

What I learned was, I was moving more then and was stronger all around than what my current style of working out was. I was hitting and being hit! I had to brace at the right moment and be fluid and as fast as I could with my DNA, which is not much! :) I first learned about kettlebells through cross fit workouts . From another friend I was introduced to Dave, The Iron Tamer, Whitley. When I met with Dave I hired him for personal training because my schedule was very difficult to commit to a class and I am not sure if at that time I fully understood the benefits or how important classes are. I hired Dave for 10 sessions and bought 2-16 kg and 2-24 kg. I am not sure if I even made it through all 10 sessions. Life got in the way and a year later I was no closer to my physical goals that before.

After much encouragement from my best friend and wife, I decided to join Dave’s classes and this time I made it a priority! I quickly became addicted to kettlebells and the training! I could not get enough of it. I wanted to learn and perfect my technique. I got really frustrated when I would leave class and my back hurt. Sometimes I could not even leave until it calmed down. I was having to relearn how to use my glutes and hams vs using my back. I learned I had been using the wrong muscles for a long time -not to mention how tight my hip flexors were. I went head first and gave it everything I had and challenged myself to pass the instructors course and join the ranks of others to be called RKC! I cannot tell you how important personal training with an RKC instructor is, especially in group classes! The group classes motivated me and kept me accountable to show up. I could not have achieved the results on my own. I would not have passed the RKC course without the whole group!

The are many things one could compare the RKC with. I will compare it to marriage. You really don’t know what you are getting into until you say I DO! Not until I was married and spent time with my spouse did I really know what I said yes to. Through time and experience I understood what the RKC system is all about! I have been married for 18 years and I am learning every day how to love my wife well. It has not even been a year since passing RKC last Aug. I only planned on passing the RKC. Since then, I have become Indian Club Certified and attended the CK-FMS and am in the process of becoming certified as a CK-FMS also. I will also be attending The Summit of Strength being taught by 4 of the Master RKC instructors, Brett Jones, David Whitley, Jeff O’Conner and Geoff Neupert. I have had the privilege of meeting each one of these men and they are gifted teachers and instructors. I learn something every time I am with them, as well as many of the other RKC instructors I have met this past year. Everyone of them is passionate about RKC and always improving and becoming better no matter what your age or genetics.

There is a great deal written by many about what they have learned from Pavel and the RKC. I could not begin to put into words what I have learned about myself and the RKC! I love every minute of it and look forward to learning and practicing for the rest of my life. I am 41 and in the best shape of my life! I am stronger and have more endurance than ever! I don’t have a gym membership and will never have to look for one again unless I want to. I can get everything I need from a few kettlebells. I don’t have enough time in my day to practice everything I have learned over the past year. I look forward to every time I get to train or teach and train someone else.

What is your take away? It is never too late to to change! Start today with doing 1 thing different. Find a RKC instructor here and begin swinging! If you are in the Nashville area look the Iron Tamer up. If you are in the Franklin or Cool Springs area come see me at Tennessee Kettlebell!

Thank you Pavel, Dragon Door,David Whitley, Nashville Kettlebell Boot Camp, My RKC team mates:Mark and Nikki Snow, Jay Cannon,Matt and Kristen McBryde,Doc Cheng-my team leader,Brett Jones, Jeff O’Conner and the many others that have paved the road for me to follow! I look forward to training with you for a long time!

The Rest of the Story!

This is long over due but what is new in my world! Many times I have thought about writing this and just did not stop and make the time to do it. It is a lot like writing out my budget! I still have not sat down to focus on that yet either! One thing at a time!

Here is the rest of my body experiment with eating Vegan for a month. I will let the lab results speak first:

3/24/10

Cholesterol 236 (0-200)

Triglyceride 136 (<150)

HDL 57 (>39)

Total Chol/

HDL Ratio 4.1

VDL Chol 27 (0-40)

LDL Chol 152 (0-99)

4/26/10

Cholesterol 177 (0-200)

Triglyceride 104 (<150)

HDL 42 (>39)

Total Chol/

HDL Ratio 4.2

VDL Chol 21 (0-40)

LDL Chol 114 (0-99)

Total Cholesterol reduction in 1 month is 59 points! Everything except LDL is with in the normal range. After I saw these results I was shocked as was my Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and others in my family. There was no doubt I was going to continue eating this way.

It has not been that hard either. The biggest thing was learning what to eat. I have had very little meat since this. I can count on 1 hand the times I have had meat. When I did have meat, it was very little not because I did not want it, but it has lost much of its taste. I find the vegetables have a much more flavor. I make a great pulled pork recipe and have cooked it 2x in the past month at others request. I normally would have devoured it after I smoked it and puled it apart. Not this time. I had a couple of bites and that is it. I did not want any more. Now I grill some very tasty veggies!

I have found mixed opinions on eating vegan. Many are the same opinions I have had when I met someone who was a vegetarian or vegan. I find it is an emotional connection with eating meat vs and educational connection. The first thing people ask me is how are you getting enough protein. I ask how much do I need? They usually say “I don’t know”. Truth is, I don’t either!

The 2nd week I started eating more beans, rice, and potatoes. It helped me stay full longer than just fruits and vegetables. I have found there are many quick ways to eat this way thanks to Trader Joe’s and Wild Oats. Even Costco has pre-made ready to eat Vegetarian foods. I had a great mushroom burger some friends brought over for dinner the other night.

So there you have the rest of the story. I am continuing to eat whole food, plant based foods. I don’t count any thing and eat until I am full and still have lost weight.

Train and eat and drink to your health!

4/26 Day 34

Today I returned to get my lab work drawn to see how the last month went. My weight this am was 188.4. I am undetermined if I am going to continue eating this way. The eggs Cami cooked this morning was smelling really good. The last week has been harder more so because of the lack of variety. I need to go to the store for more items. I did begin my garden for the summer. I need more plants aleady. I did not realize how many plants I can use. I did not get them all in the ground yet but will work on that this week.

Training has been spotty so I need to pick it up for the next 3 1/2 weeks before I go back to St. Paul for CK-FMS. I need to get my snatch numbers up again! Snatches, snatches and more snatches the next couple of weeks! I also plan on swing doubles to get ready to retest!

Keep growing, learning, and applying!

Until next time!

4/13-21 Days

Today is 21 days into vegan diet. I had to look to see when I started. I can not believe it has been 3 weeks already. After the first 2 weeks I noticed a slight decrease in my performance during training. I read some other information from other vegan trainers and they recommended more whole grains, beans, potatoes, as well as the vegetables. One sight also encouraged Sun Warrior protein, which I already had and like. So, I added some protein shakes as well as more whole grains, beans, and potatoes. Cami bought a Japanese sweet potato this weekend, but it looks like a regular white potato. It was good. I fired up the Big Green Egg and grilled a bunch of veggies and some chicken for everyone else and our company. I got full from the grilled veggies and sweet potato. We even had left overs and I had them the next day for dinner after I trained.

My weight dropped down to 186.7 in the first week. I am now right at 189. I was looking at some old measurements from a few years ago. This has not been just from the vegan diet. I have been training consistently for the last year. The biggest change I hope will be in my cholesterol, when I get that checked at the end of the month.

WIll I continue eating this way? I don’t really know. I have missed some foods. Cami made eggs and bacon for kids this past week. It smelled very good. I do miss my eggs! I was reading in The China Study last night that the recommended cholesterol daily intake is 300 mg and an egg has 200+ mg. I would normally eat 3-4 eggs every day. Now it has been Irish steel cut oatmeal and fruit! I will have protein shake mid morning, today I had a veggie sandwich from subway for lunch, some broccoli and hummus for a snack around 3:30 and most likely a salad for dinner with left over grilled veggies.

Until next time, eat whole foods, whole food digestive enzymes, and drink plenty of Kangen Water!

Keeping it simple!

4/1 Day 9

Going in to Day 9 I weight 187.5 this morning! Loosing weight has never been this easy for me. I am not going hungry by any means. I have been stuck at 192-195 for a while. I went to Genghis Grill last night for the first time with The Iron Tamer and Matt and Kristin McBryde after we finished moving into our new facility! I had never been there before. It was a pleasant surprise! If you have never been they give you a bowl to fill up with what ever you want from there buffet of meats and veggies, spices and you pick the sauce. Of course I got all veggies and brown rice. To my surprise we could go back for more and so I did! I had 2 large bowels of veggies and Brown rice!

I went to the doctor yesterday and discussed my lab work with her and what I am doing for the next month. I was the 3rd patient that had told her about The China Study. She said she was going to have to pick it up and read it. I have a very cool doctor. They are Cool Springs Family Medicine. They are a traditional doctors but with a much more holistic approach. They do colonics, hyberbaric oxygen, infra red sauna, vitamins and more. they are even looking at adding one of my Kangen Water systems.

Speaking of vitamins , I can not wait to my new ones come today. Shan Stratton who used to work with a former company of mine and many of the pro athlete teams and individual athletes, has started his own line of of nutritional products. Please check out Core Health Products. They are a complete product with enzymes, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, probiotics, and probiotics. I am taking the Core Health Pack and Digestive Health.

I did trained Tues. with the snatch test. I am out of conditioning for it. So after wards I did more swings with a 24 kb KB. I am going to go back to swings and snatches for the next couple of weeks until I can get back to my previous snatch test conditioning. This will be a good test to the eating plan I am doing. Matt asked me how I was doing with RKC prep work since going Vegan. So far so good. This week I have noticed more energy than before and have been waking up better even with less sleep. I have still cut back on the Americanos also.

The experiment continues!
